A few days ago Brian Williams, NBC Nightly News anchor, came forward and admitted he had lied about one of his reports while in Iraq. The story has garnered allot of attention, in fact becoming a front page story in the New York Times. You can’t turn on the television without hearing about how disappointed everyone is and other journalists going on about the integrity of their field. And while everyone seems to be completely mystified by his admission, God revealed to me that at the core of what Williams did, lying, is truly only a symptom of a greater disease that’s running rampant through our society. The disease of relativism.
Relativism is “the belief that different things are true, right, etc., for different people or at different times”. Webster’s Dictionary.
In essence, truth varies from person to person. What someone deems as truth is not the same for someone else. This is a doctrine that has been infecting our culture for decades and it will be the cause of America’s freedom being lost.
In a relative society, truth and honesty don’t exist because there are no standards by which to measure. In a relative society, no one can be held accountable for their actions because their actions are always justified by their own standards, personal truths and beliefs. However, the problem with relativism is no one believes their personal truths are wrong.
A few days ago I learned that Dr. Ben Carson, a very prominent physician and current presidential candidate has been placed on the “Extremist Files” list by the Southern Poverty Law Center. Why? Because he believes the definition of marriage is between one man and one woman and he verbalized his beliefs. That’s it. He simply said what he believed to be true. In a relative society his comments shouldn’t garner any attention at all. So, why has an upstanding citizen been placed on a list that includes Neo-Nazis and other extremist groups? Simply put, relativism is a lie.
A society that chooses to invoke relativism is doing nothing more than living in chaos. “Where there is no revelation, people cast off restraint; but blessed is the one who heeds wisdom’s instruction.” Proverbs 29:18.
Why has there been such an onslaught of attack against the Ten Commandments? Has it truly been because the word “God” appears in them? It appears to me that if you believe everyone is “truly” entitled to their opinion and has the “right” to live as they believe, the word God would have no affect on you. But it goes deeper than that doesn’t it? There is a deeper, more sinister reason many groups are fighting to tear down biblical principals and attempting to silence the followers of Jesus. The truth that they are too cowardly to admit is they want the power of control.
See, there is no such thing as relativism. Those who say, “you are free to live as you believe” don’t really mean it. They’re actually saying, “you are free to live in peace, only if you believe and accept that our beliefs are the truth.” How can I make such a statement? I base it simply on their actions. When anyone defames someone’s character based solely on them voicing their opinion truth no longer is relative. Because that group or individual has decided they are right and anyone who opposes is wrong.
The beauty of being a follower of Jesus is laws don’t apply. Why? Because there is no law against love. True, sacrificial love.
Now, while some would rather point fingers at those who follow Jesus, who is the Christ, and attempt to blame atrocities on us. The truth is, followers of Jesus are not and have not, nor will ever kill another human or animal in the name or honor of the Only Living God. However, this doesn’t mean we don’t have the right to defend ourselves. There is a clear distinction and those who can’t see it truly don’t care to engage reality, they choose only to believe what they believe.
The fact that followers of Jesus will not engage in cruelty against humanity has come across to some as a weakness. As a result, they believe that if they’re able to gain political and judicial power they will finally be able to create laws that work in their favor. The end game is to silence all believers and have God stripped from all places in which it’s inscribed. Doesn’t sound anything like relativism does it?
What those who oppose God and His Only Son fail to realize is those of us who are believers are so NOT because of the Ten Commandments or any such laws, it’s because we CHOOSE to be. All of us know what it feels like to attempt to satisfy one need or another in our lives with some empty act of self gratification. All of us know what it feels like to be emotionally bankrupt and at the point of despair. And as a result, all of us know the freedom that we’ve found in the name above all names, Jesus. We’re living witnesses of the grace of God and we know that true freedom will never be found in laws. Freedom and unconditional love are only found in a life submitted to the Lordship of Jesus.
The lies Brian Williams has told are minuscule compared to the lies of anyone who has espoused relativism within our society. Do you want to know what a society looks like that does not fear God nor chooses to follow His basic laws, the Ten Commandments? Look no further than across the Atlantic into the middle east. That is what civilization without God is like. There is Only One God and Father and Only One Son of God who died for the sins of the world. May God have mercy on us as we enter into the times that are to come.
The truth is God is the final authority in all things just and good. God is the only one who provides grace, freedom, joy, peace and fulfillment. Any other factions, religions, false gods or false teachers will tell you otherwise but deep within everyone there is a longing to know their creator. Everyone wants to experience unconditional love. That’s why there are no perfect parents. Why would we need God our Heavenly Father if our earthly parents were perfect. We need Him. We need Him desperately. It’s through this post that I hope if you are not a follower of Jesus you will be challenged to truly seek out why you believe as you do. Don’t be a goat and swallow every idol idea someone tosses at you just because it sounds good or it makes you feel better about yourself. Life is not about feeling good about yourself. True life is knowing the Only Living God and Jesus His Only Son. Remember, unconditional love and fulfillment are only found in Jesus. Seek God and you will find Him. Ask Him to reveal the truth to you and He will.
To those who are followers of the Christ, God’s chosen one. Commit yourself to reading His word. Commit yourself to prayer. Allow God to heal your hearts from the past and fill you with the newness of His love, courage, strength, peace and power. Walk with your head up so you can recognize the enemy. Pray for your enemy’s. Love All. And remain confident in this, we are just passing through this world. Our home is not of this world. There will be deep sorrow, but there will be even greater rejoicing once we are with the King of Kings. Till we are with Him, let us continue to stand till we have done everything we can. Stand firm is His love and grace and may the God of all creation continue to bless you abundantly, keep you safe and fill you with His eternal peace. Till next time God bless!
