Psalms 23 – The 2020 Edition

The Lord is my shepherd;
Jesus Christ is my King, my Ruler, the One who reigns over all that I am and all that I do.

I shall not want.
John 6:51 Christ Jesus says: “I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world.”

He makes me to lie down in green pastures;
Christ Jesus desires our rest. He has become my rest. Matthew 12:8 Jesus says: “For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”
Matthew 11:29 Jesus says: “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

He leads me beside the still waters.
He leads me/us beside still waters. Not beside a rushing stream or whitewater rapids, but beside still waters where we are able to drink, or bath and find refreshment for our soul.
Christ Jesus is the Living Water. John 4:14 Jesus says: “But whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a fount of water springing up to eternal life.”
Christ Jesus set an example that while we are beside the still waters it’s an opportunity to not only refresh ourselves but also refresh those around us as well. John 13:4-5 “So He got up from the supper, laid aside His outer garments, and wrapped a towel around His waist. After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and dry them with the towel that was around Him.”

He restores my soul;
The Hebrew word for restore in this case is shuwb, which literally means “to turn back; return”.
Ephesians 2: 4-9 tells us, “But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.

He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.
Christ Jesus prayed in John 17:9-11 “I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours. And all Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine, and I am glorified in them. Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We are.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me;
We pause for a moment and take a break from laying down in green pastures and walking beside still waters for Almighty God to remove the zoom lens and replace it with a panoramic lens revealing our exact location. All this time we have been within the valley of the shadow of death, and with every step we’ve taken Christ Jesus has been with us. Our focus must always be on Jesus, otherwise life can become overwhelming.
In Matthew 14:28-32 as Jesus was walking on water and had addressed the disciples Peter calls out: “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!” And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.”
We must also always remember 2 Timothy 1:7 “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
Christ Jesus taught in John 10:14-16 “I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own. As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep. And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over.
Imagine walking into a banquet hall and being seated at a table covered with all your favorite foods, only those seated with you are not your closest friends, but those who have ridiculed you, hated you, used you or physically hurt you. And yet here you are, the guest of honor.
However, it’s important to remember what Christ Jesus taught in Matthew 6:14-15 “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life;
Christ Jesus taught in John 8:34-36 “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.
Christ Jesus said in John 10:10 “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.”

And I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever.
Finally, in Revelation 7:14-17 it reads: “And I said to him, “Sir, you know.” So he said to me, “These are the ones who come out of the great tribulation, and washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Therefore they are before the throne of God, and serve Him day and night in His temple. And He who sits on the throne will dwell among them. They shall neither hunger anymore nor thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any heat; for the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne will shepherd them and lead them to living fountains of waters. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”
